We are looking for a highly experienced systems architect who has a strong background in real-time embedded computing, particularly in the ADAS and automated vehicles (AV) space. The architecture team within Motional’s Vehicle & Product Systems organization owns the big picture system design and finds balance between technical breadth and depth. As a systems architect, focusing on processing across our system, you will be part of a cross-functional team that defines our next-generation system architecture and compute platform. You will play a key role in working with our autonomy, platform infrastructure, and product experts to architect the detailed design and implementation of our next-generation system comprising cutting-edge automotive microprocessors, a highly capable and efficient cluster of compute SoC,and a high-speed communication network. You will also support hardware selection and the definition of the overall physical systems architecture.

In addition to your technical leadership within our next-generation program, you will work closely with software, hardware, and systems engineers in launching our 2022 and 2023 Robotaxi programs based on the Hyundai IONIQ-5 vehicle and our current-generation system with automotive MCUs, vision processors, GPUs, and high-performance computing cores. You will play a key role in guiding teams on various problems related to real-time software and hardware acceleration of functions on a heterogeneous computing platform. 

What you'll be doing:

  • Provide technical direction, support, and mentorship across Engineering in implementing and testing the current-generation system, particularly related to the implementation of an AV stack running on a heterogeneous distributed platform.
  • Provide support and advice when it comes to the overall functional decomposition and how it gets allocated and implemented on a heterogeneous hardware platform, while meeting application requirements as well as non-functional requirements including but not limited to timing and functional safety.
  • Lead end-to-end design and allocation of functions onto our next-generation system architecture, which includes a new compute solution based on many processing cores and accelerators for machine learning applications.
  • Workload modeling and mapping to heterogeneous functional units.
  • Write detailed system design specifications.
  • Support our core infrastructure and compute team in the design and evaluation of next-generation SoCs.
  • Engage with automotive suppliers and provide technical assessments to guide business decisions, hardware selection, and procurement.
  • Lead development of bench demonstrations to validate designs and reduce program risk.

What we're looking for:

  • Deep understanding in the area of real-time computing, particularly multicore computer architectures, memory architecture, GPUs, accelerators, operating systems, and hardware/software co-design.
  • Good knowledge of the end-to-end software stack for automated vehicles.
  • Deep end-to-end understanding of processing across a heterogeneous platform, including sensor readings, data movement, computing, and actuator outputs.
  • Experience with realizing functional safety requirements and their impact on automotive SoCs, MCUs, and software.
  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art automotive SoCs and MCUs, including for ADAS and automated driving applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and relentless desire to learn continuously.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to transfer your knowledge and expertise to others.

Bonus points (not required):

  • Experience defining software architectures for distributed embedded systems comprising multicore technologies and heterogeneous accelerators such as GPUs, FPGAs, or ASICs.Experience with Ethernet, PCI-Express, and/or MIPI interfaces.
  • Experience with the automotive development process and production programs.
  • Experience with functional decomposition and parallel computing/acceleration to meet real-time performance and low-power requirements.
